The Chapel Hill - Carrboro Area

Chapel Hill is a mid-sized city in North Carolina’s “Triangle” region, forming one part of the combined Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area.

Chapel Hill extends into both Orange and Durham Counties and borders the town of Carrboro to the west. Chapel Hill is also around 30 minutes from central Durham to the northeast, and around 45 minutes from downtown Raleigh to the east. Hillsborough is 20 minutes to the north.

The main access routes through Chapel Hill are Fordham Boulevard (US Highway 501) and County Road 86. The I-40 Highway runs past Chapel Hill to the north.

The area around Chapel Hill is defined by low-density forested neighborhoods, and low-intensity farmland to the west and south. There are also a few bodies of water, like Eastwood Lake, University Lake, and the large Jordan Lake to the south. Morgan, Bolin, and Booker Creeks also run through the town.

Carrboro is a small town adjacent to Chapel Hill in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The downtown area of Carrboro is continuous with that of Chapel Hill along Franklin Street which connects the town to Durham approximately 30 minutes to the northeast.

Located in Orange County, Carrboro is also part of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill statistical area - known for its many prestigious universities, and medical research facilities.

Carrboro covers approximately 6.5 square miles consisting of a charming downtown area, mixed-use residential, low-density forested residential, and woodlands. Residents enjoy the warm summer weather and mild winters with occasional snow.

Chapel Hill - Carrboro Real Estate

Real estate in Chapel Hill consists of many mid to large-sized single-family homes in leafy, well-established neighborhoods. The real estate market in Carrboro is small, but filled with opportunities for affordable homes in a range of charming styles. There are a number of historic homes near downtown Carrboro that were built for local mill workers. These homes - both the preserved and restored examples - feature red-brick exteriors and white accents on the large front porches and roof trim.

Carrboro has many homes for sale in this or similar early to mid-century style. There are also larger single-family homes in Colonial or Farm inspired styles, with tall front-facing gables, decks, and garages.

Further out from the town center are more rural properties, with big lots and farm style homes.

Things to Do in Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill is a historic town with many sites of historical significance and interest. There are around a dozen notable buildings and districts on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill Town Hall, and Playmakers Theatre.

One of the nationally recognized historic landmarks is the University of North Carolina. The UNC campus includes many beautiful buildings and parks, a stadium, and a planetarium.

The university is also an important component in the wider area’s research network, including many universities, research labs, and medical facilities.

Apart from visiting the scenic and interesting university grounds, there are many other places to see in Chapel Hill. These include:

Along with being in close and convenient proximity to some major urban centers, Chapel Hill still retains the feel of a small-town community. As such, there are many regular community events to bring people together, like the Festifall street fair.

To some, Carrboro is known as an urban satellite of the University of North Carolina campus located in Chapel Hill. This university contributes an exciting culture to the area, along with a number of attractions all of its own.

However, Carrboro is a town with a lot to offer. To begin with, it’s historic residential district is renowned for its distinctive architecture, with many preserved and restored examples. Check out West Popular and Sykes streets to see some of the best examples.

Some sights and attractions in Carrboro include:

  • The ArtsCenter & Cat’s Cradle - two notable local music and performance venues
  • The Dirty South Institute Comedy Theater and Comedy School

Carrboro is also home to a large number of unique and popular restaurants, two branches of the Orange County Public Library System, and around 10 parks, including the 55-acre Henry Anderson III Community Park which contains top-quality sports facilities and a dog park. Part of the Carolina North Forest lies in the northern portion of Carrboro, and University Lake is situated a short distance to the west.

Carrboro hosts a number of popular annual events, like the Carrboro Music Festival, West End Poetry Festival, and the Carrboro Film Festival.
